Netflix - Dragon's Dogma

 Dragon's Dogma - Review

     By. Justin Azevedo

Synopsis: After his Village destroyed, his wife murdered and his heart taken, by a Dragon (Voiced by. David Lodge). Ethan (Voiced by. Greg Chun) has become an Arisen and with the Pawn called Hannah (Voiced by. Erica Mendez), set on a quest to slay the Dragon and reclaim his heart!

The series adapted the greatly from the game. How a Arisen is chosen, the connection between the Arisen and Dragon, the purpose of the Pawns. For this series an original Protagonist and other characters were created, with only the Dragon, being the only character from the game. A common theme in this series is the Main Protagonist, facing one of the Seven Deadly Sins in his quest!

Ethan (Voiced by. Greg Chun), was a hunter in a fishing village. He was a fisherman himself with his father, however Ethan and his father became stranded at seas and his father did not eat or drink, so that Ethan could survive and be rescued. Ethan was recued, but his father perished, thus resulting in Ethan becoming a Hunter in the village. He finds love, and has a wife and also soon to have a child, all that burns when the Dragon attacks his village. The Dragon's first kills Ethan's friend, then his wife. Feeling the hatred and rage from Ethan, the Dragon takes his heart and turns him into a Arisen. Ethan then journey's with the goal of killing the Dragon, accompanying him is Hannah a pawn that went to his side, when Ethan became a Arisen. As Ethan journey to the "Dragon's Lair", he faces many challenges, some from humans and other creatures. Ethan's attempts to help those in need, don't go as he intended and he soon sees more and more of the failures of humanity. He also soon begins to feel the power of a Berserker and soon that's feel a cold emotion. Though over the course of the journey, he starts to form a strong bond with Hannah. As Ethan finally faces off against the Dragon again, he learns the truth behind, what a Arisen. Though Ethan, could agree on what the Dragon said, about the failures of Humanity, he also believes in their potential and though he tries to resist given the Dragon what he wanted from Ethan, he failed. At the end Ethan became a Dragon himself, but before leaving the lands, he entrusted Hannah, to prepare Humanity, for the Day he returns!

Hannah (Voiced by. Erica Mendez) is a pawn. Who came to Ethan's Aid when he became an Arisen, and pledge her services to him and journey with him in his quest to slay the Dragon. Hannah told him what a Arisen is and her purpose as the Arisen's pawn. At first she did not have a name, so this lead Ethan to name her himself. Ethan gave her the name "Hannah" after his mother and the name he had planned to name his child if it was a girl. Over the course of the journey, Hannah wondered why Ethan wanted to sideline his quest to find the Dragon and help others they came across. As a Pawn she is ready to lay down her life to protect Ethan. She first did not understand Human emotion's but that soon change, as she saw more of a change in Ethan. Near the end Hannah began to express more emotion of caring, as she saw Ethan going Berserk against the Dragon and seeing her emotion help him a bit, but not completely. Hannah made a promise to Ethan when he turned into the Dragon and that was to help Humanity and prepare them, to defeat him, when he return and she accepted. Hannah continues the journey on her own and helps Humanity, keeping her promise to Ethan!

The Dragon (Voiced by. David Lodge) came to Ethan's village unexpectedly and attack, killing many, including Ethan's friend and his wife. Upon meeting and facing Ethan, he could sense the Hatred within him and so made Ethan into a Arisen, by taking his Heart and told him to seek The Dragon out to reclaim it. The Dragon went to the mountains, to it's Lair, while also wrecking havoc at other places. Upon meeting Ethan again the Dragon explained more of his overall reason of attacking Ethan's village and what the Dragon only desires one thing. He goes on to explain that he too was once Human and a  Arisen, and that he took on the same quest that Ethan has taken. The Dragon foresaw two outcomes, either he would kill Ethan or Ethan would kill him and the cycle would begin again, which it did, only this time Ethan would have Humanity prepared to face him as the Dragon!

The Series, took on the elements on the game, The Arisen, the Pawns and the Dragon. Of course this Series has it's own original story and characters. The theme of this Series is Ethan facing off against a "Sin" in each episode Wrath, Gluttony, Envy, Sloth, Greed, Lust and Pride. These Sins were a challenge for Ethan to face, leading up to his final confrontation with the Dragon, to help him understand, when he learns the truth about the Arisen and the Dragon.

The story of the series, was a good adaptation to the game. The Action was also well interpreted and the animation was well made. Though I have to say it did lack many things, and feels like it missed many important scenarios and character build ups!

My Rating for Dragon's Dogma is... (Good)
